Joel Mayfield

Joel Winthrop Mayfield, Sr. born June 4, 1937, the son of the late Elenore Clarke and reared by his late, Aunt Earnestine Mayfield and late, Uncle Willis White, Sr. He was born in Harlem NY but a lifetime resident of Poughkeepsie NY.  He was educated in the Poughkeepsie City School District and served in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged in 1956. 

Joel was predominantly self-employed as an independent contractor and painter.  He assisted in the building and painting of many businesses and establishments throughout Dutchess County. He also was previously employed by Culinary Institute of the Arts. He was very interested in Black History and The Civil Rights Movement. He enjoyed socializing with his friends.

On Friday, January 13, 2023, Joel passed away peacefully at home with his son and some family at his side. He is survived by his sons: Nazeeh Shabazz and Michael Mayfield of Georgia; Darrin Mayfield of Newburgh and Joel Swartz of Poughkeepsie and daughters: Sharon Mayfield of Poughkeepsie and Regina Mayfield of Texas; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives and friends.

He is predeceased by his mother, Elenore Clarke, sister, Earnestine Boone and his daughter, Cynthia Mayfield.

 A Memorial Service will be held on January 24, 2023 at the Timothy P. Doyle Funeral Home located on 371 Hooker Ave, Poughkeepsie New York from 2:00pm to 4:00pm

Repast to follow at Poughkeepsie Village; 37 N. Perry Street, Poughkeepsie NY from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm.
